FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Sept. 27, 2019) — The following Fort Leonard Wood announcements are for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 4.
Sept. 30 – Nov. 1
Registration for Winter Youth Sports will be open from September 30 – November 1. The sports available are Cheer, Basketball, and Introduction to Wrestling. Sports physicals and health assessments are required before youth can practice or play. Flu shots are required by December 15. The cost for Cheer is $45 per person, ages 5-12, and includes a team uniform top and medallion. The cost of basketball is $25 for youth ages 3 and 4 and $45 per person, ages 5-10. Youth will receive a team uniform jersey and medallion. The cost of Introduction to Wrestling is $45 per person and is open to youth ages 5-10. Youth will receive a team uniform top and medallion. Oct. 4
The Maneuver Support Center of Excellence will celebrate its 20th anniversary Oct. 4 beginning with a ceremonial retreat at 4:30 p.m. on MSCoE Plaza, followed by a Tattoo presented by the 399th Army Band.
Oct. 5
Bring the family out to Fire Fest Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Main Post Exchange parking lot. The event, hosted by the Fort Leonard Wood Fire Department in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, allows area families the opportunity to see fire trucks and equipment while visiting and learning from firefighters.
Don’t miss Fort Leonard Wood’s annual Oktoberfest celebration scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Pershing Community Center. Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood National Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Luncheon is slated for 11:30 to 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Pershing Community Center. The Fort Leonard Wood Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program will hold a Career and Education Fair, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10 in Nutter Field House. The Career Fair is open to active duty service members, retirees, veterans, family members, contractors and anyone else who is interested in employment or education opportunities. Those seeking employment openings should come to the event prepared to interview, in professional dress attire and with copies of their resume for employers they are interested in. The Boss Haunted House is slated to be open from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 11-12, 18-19 and 25-26 at Building 709 off Utah and Minnesota streets. Cost is $5 per person or only $3 if you show up in costume. Fort Leonard Wood’s Ready and Resilient Fair is scheduled to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 17 at Nutter Field House. The event, open to all service members, family members and civilian employees, is a great way to meet some annual mandatory training requirements while gaining valuable information on about various agencies. The Fort Leonard Wood Army Volunteer Corps Program will host the 2019 Make a Difference Day Oct. 26, beginning at 7 a.m. AVC is looking for organizations with projects that volunteers can participate in on this Make a Difference Day. Make a commitment to help others for just one day. Make a difference on Make a Difference Day. Operation Little Learner, Tuesdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and Fridays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Piney Hills Community Center. Operation Little Learner is a family bonding program designed to support social and cognitive development in little learners ages 0 to 5 years old. For more information, call 573.329.4513.
Work is currently being done to the street lights on the outbound lane of Missouri Avenue from the Main Gate to Diamond Street. The work is part of an ongoing project by Fort Leonard Wood’s public utility contractor, Laclede Electric, to replace the street lights’ circuit along Missouri Avenue from the Main Gate to First Street. The project is expected to last throughout the fall and will impact street lights on both the outbound and inbound lanes.
All Department of Defense ID card holders working on post as contractors or vendors may no longer use a DoD civilian, retiree, military or dependent ID card as a way to gain access to the installation for the purpose for which they are employed as a contractor or vendor. If a retiree accesses the installation for purposes such as their personal use of the Commissary, PX, FMWR facilities or activities such as medical appointments that are not commercial, business or contracted then the retiree or DoD ID card holder may use their issued DoD ID card. Those needing to apply for a contractor pass should visit the Main Gate Visitor Center.
The Office of The Judge Advocate General is now accepting applications for the Army’s Funded Legal Education Program. Under this program, the Army projects sending up to 25 active duty commissioned officers to law school at government expense. Selected officers will attend law school beginning the Fall of 2020 and will remain on active duty while attending law school. Interested officers should review Chapter 10, AR 27-1 to determine their eligibility. This program is open to commissioned officers in the rank of second lieutenant through captain. Applicants must have at least two but not more than six years of total active federal service at the time legal training begins. Interested officers should contact Lt. Col.
